Recentment he tingut l’oportunitat de llegir un article de Harvard Business Review titulat: How do I become a CEO?, que m’agradaria sintetitzar a continuació, juntament amb algunes reflexions pròpies.
Arribar a una posició de Direcció General és una aspiració de molts, però una possibilitat real per a molt pocs. Vivim en una societat on es fomenta arribar lluny, tenir objectius ambiciosos i créixer constantment. A tots ens sonen frases com “l’únic limit ets tu”, o en anglès, que generalment sembla que sona millor: “the sky is the limit”.
Primera dosi de realitat: no tothom té la capacitat i el potencial per esdevenir un líder d’una organització.
Segona dosi de realitat: no tothom té el coratge, la valentia, la resiliència, ni la motivació necessària per ocupar aquesta posició de responsabilitat.
Per tant, tota persona plantejant-se, fins i tot de forma remota, arribar a una posició de lideratge, cal formular dues preguntes (que, de vegades, porten a conclusions poc agradables de primeres, especialment per a persones amb una forta ambició):
- Tinc les capacitats, o com a mínim el potencial, per aconseguir liderar i generar impacte?
- Tinc la motivació i la resiliència suficient per continuar remant en una travessia llarga i desgastant?
Si la resposta és negativa, probablement és millor centrar-se en alternatives i enfocar-se en un altre tipus d’objectius. De fet, és la millor decisió possible. Òbviament, no es tracta de ser conformista i llençar la tovallola. Però si la resposta és un clar no, aleshores és el moment de buscar altres camins que ens condueixin a més felicitat i satisfacció.
Si la resposta a les preguntes anteriors és afirmativa, és el moment de fer un exercici honest d’autoconeixement següent i analitzar el nostre valor diferencial en 3 pilars claus:
- La capacitat de dissenyar, o com diu l’article, ser un “arquitecte organitzacional”. En definitiva, veure fins a quin punt tenim la capacitat d’ajuntar persones talentoses, alinear-les amb una visió comuna, oferir-los guia i desenvolupament professional, i assolir objectius. No és gens fàcil. De fet, és probablement el repte més gran que existeix a una carrera professional. Ser un professional brillant (el que sol anomenar-se en entorns col·laboratius un “individual contributor”) ja és difícil, però al final depèn en gran mesura de l’exercici individual. Però liderar amb èxit un equip/organització significa ser capaç de bregar amb un elevat grau de situacions que no depenen de tu.
- Generar (i mantenir) un network potent. En general, un/a director/a general amb èxit té la capacitat de teixir relacions sanes a tots els nivells: amistats, família, clients, proveïdors, organismes, etc. Són persones amb un interès genuí, precisament, a les persones. I molt important el matís: no es tracta de crear un network potent (que ja és difícil). Es tracta de mantenir-lo en el temps, i això requereix valors sòlids: integritat, honestedat, i visió a llarg termini.
- Crear una visió i transmetre passió. En altres paraules: tenir un propòsit clar. Són persones que tenen clar per què són aquí, per què fan el que fan, i que es preocupen alhora de com ho fan.
Arribar a les conclusions anteriors no és difícil. El que és difícil és saber què s’ha de fer per aconseguir accedir a una posició de lideratge. Dos consells:
- No obsessionar-se. El focus ha d’estar al camí, i no a l’objectiu final.
- Lligat amb el punt anterior, qualsevol professional amb aspiracions ha de cuidar el camí, i això passa per “actuar com un propietari” (el famós ownership, tan difícil de traduir) a cada pas del camí. Des que un comença la seva carrera com a becari/ària, fins a una funció d’especialista, com ja en posicions manager o direcció.
Per tant, i com a resum, hi ha una fórmula per aconseguir arribar a una posició de Direcció General? Per mi, es podria assemblar a la següent:
Direcció General = (motivació + capacitats + resiliència + ownership) + (construir equips + network + passió/visió)
