Liquid society: the environment we move in.  

In recent years, the concept of “liquid society” coined by Zygmunt Bauman has become relevant to describe the ever-changing and volatile social environment in which we live. This concept suggests that we live in a society characterised by uncertainty, constant change and fluidity, where traditional structures quickly fade away, giving way to new forms of interaction and organisation. This dynamic has also spilled over into the business world, giving rise to “agile organisations” and the demand for “adaptable talent”.

The notion of a liquid society revolves around its constant state of change and transformation. Technological advances, globalisation and societal challenges have strained the way we interact, work and live. In this reality, adaptability has become a crucial skill for survival and progress. Those who can “embrace” uncertainty, learn quickly and adapt to new situations have a clear competitive advantage.

Liquid organisations as a response to the demands of the environment

To remain relevant in a liquid society, organisations have been forced to evolve. Traditional hierarchical structures and rigid processes are no longer effective in coping with a volatile environment and changing customer expectations. Agile organisations are characterised by their flexibility and ability to adapt quickly to a non-linear environment. They foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning and agile decision-making.

Liquid Talent: The Key to a Successful Career      

In this dynamic environment, the concept of “adaptable talent” has emerged as an essential attribute for professionals. Employees with adaptable talent possess an open and permeable mindset, allowing them to develop transferable skills and acquire new knowledge. They can thrive in different roles and contexts, and show an openness to take on unfamiliar challenges. This versatility allows them to adapt quickly to new circumstances and bring significant value by responding to the needs of increasingly agile organisations.

Liquid or adaptable talent also has the ability to create and maintain strong networks of contacts. It is impossible to adapt by living in watertight environments. Connecting with diverse people (inside and outside your own organisation), and fostering interdisciplinary or cross-departmental collaboration is crucial to gain broader perspectives and find innovative solutions to new problems as they emerge.

Conclusion: Embracing Adaptability for the Future

Liquid talent is a consequence of the dynamics of the society in which we live.

Unfortunately for those who love stability and are resistant to change, adaptability, flexibility and openness to change have become essential to thrive in a world characterised by uncertainty.

Those unable to navigate change and who cling to obsolete structures are left behind, while those who embrace adaptability discover unlimited opportunities and possibilities. 

It is not an easy process to manage. Indeed, it requires some “mental reprogramming”, and can be exhausting at times. But it is the only way, there is no alternative. 

In a sentence, the success of a professional in the liquid society can be summed up in his or her ability to “know what to do when he or she doesn’t know what to do”.
